There aren't actually that many standards in pneumatics, but there are still enough of them to generate queries (ISO, DIN, VDMA, CETOP, CNOMO, UNI etc.)
When we talk about standard cylinders in pneumatics, we usually mean the standards DIN ISO 6432, DIN ISO 15552 and DIN ISO 21287.
DIN ISO 6432
The DIN ISO standard 6432 includes the Festo cylinders in sizes 8 to 25. The standard cylinder in this size is the type DSNU-...
These cylinders come in different variants, such as through piston rods or square piston rods.
Round cylinder DSNU
DIN ISO 15552
The standard DIN ISO 15552, which has replaced DIN ISO 6431, includes cylinder sizes from a diameter of 32. The standard Festo cylinder in this size is the cylinder type DNC-...
Of course, these cylinders are also available in different variants.
Profile cylinder DNC
DIN ISO 21287
This is a compact cylinder.
Compact cylinder ADN
The cylinder barrel on the standard cylinder DSNU is fixed to the bearing cap and the end cap, and cannot be removed without damaging the cylinder.
This is not the case for the DNC. Here the two caps are screwed onto the profile barrel.
This means the cylinder can be dismantled, which for example is vital for replacing the piston seal.
Retrofit kits for magnets
If a cylinder can be dismantled without being destroyed, it can generally be retrofitted with a permanent magnet required for sensing.
The necessary components for converting a cylinder that is not capable of sensing into a cylinder that is capable of sensing can be ordered separately as spare parts for most cylinders.
In order to ensure that the polarity is the same for all cylinders, one side of the permanent magnet is marked red. The magnet should be installed with the colour-coded side facing the bearing cap.
Spare parts for clamping cartridges
Which clamping cartridge KP-... is installed on the standard cylinder DNC-...-KP?
|Cylinder size||Type Clamping cartridge||Part no. Clamping cartridge|
Cylinder variants S10 and S11
S10 = Slow speed. The cylinder is designed for very low piston speeds.
S11 = Low friction. The cylinder has lower frictional forces than the standard cylinder
DSNU with square piston rod
In an earlier version, the type designation for a standard cylinder DSNU with square piston rod was DSNUL-...
This cylinder now has the designation DSNU-...-...-Q.
The suffix "Q" indicates the square piston rod. These cylinders are processed using module numbers. This means that the part number only defines the basic cylinder. All features, such as the stroke length or the square piston rod, are selected individually with the modular system. With the modular system combinations can be created that were previously only possible via special development. The table compares the previous part numbers and type designations with the new part numbers and designations.

What is the permissible stroke deviation for standard cylinders?
According to DIN ISO 6432, DIN ISO 15552 and DIN ISO 21287, the stroke length may deviate from the stated stroke length due to manufacturing tolerances. These tolerances are always positive. The exact deviations permitted are listed in the table.

Did you know?
- What does the length value "L1+" mean?
The length L1 specifies the basic length of the cylinder if it were to be produced with zero stroke. The plus sign relates to the stroke, i.e. the stroke length is added to the
- How can a piston rod be protected effectively?
For standard cylinders, Festo offers protective bellows kits to protect the piston rod from oil, grease, acidic fluids, emulsions, fuel and other substances. Standard
cylinders according to VDMA 24562-1, diameter 32...100 mm, stroke 250...500 mm
- Can single-acting cylinders of type ESNU-... be used as double-acting cylinders?
Cylinders from the ESNU-... series with nominal piston sizes of 32 and larger can also be used as double-acting cylinders. Remove the flow control screw in the exhaust port
and replace it with a fitting (e.g. type QS-...). Please note: the cylinder force is lower when against the effective force of the spring (by the amount of the spring force) and
higher in the opposite direction (by the amount of the spring force).
- Can standard cylinders be used to travel to more than two defined positions?
Up to four positions can be approached by connecting two cylinders. The two cylinders are attached at the bottom using a multi-position kit.
Cylinder DNC: multi-position kit DPNC
Cylinder ADN: multi-position kit DPNA
- Are Festo standard cylinders only available in the standard stroke lengths listed?
Standard cylinders can be produced with any stroke length up to the specified maximum stroke.
- Does Festo have standard cylinders which exert a greater force with the same diameter?
Yes, such cylinders are high-force cylinders. In the case of this type of cylinder, the piston area is increased simply by having the same area working several times
in succession. The following standard cylinders can be obtained from Festo as high-force cylinders (tandem cylinders): ADNH-... , DNCT-...
- Is the piston rod nut included in the scope of delivery with type DSNU standard cylinders?
The cylinders with piston diameters 8-20mm are supplied without piston rod nuts. With piston diameters 25mm and greater, the piston rod nuts (precision thread) are included
in the scope of delivery.
- DSNU in the variant S2 (through "double-ended" piston rod): are the piston rod variants K2, K3, K5, K6, K8 and Q single-ended or double-ended?
K2 (extended piston rod - male thread): double-ended
K3 (female thread on the piston rod): double-sided
K5 (special thread on the piston rod): double-sided
K6 (shortened piston rod - male thread): single-ended
K8 (extended piston rod): single-sided
Q (square piston rod): single-sided
- Are there standard cylinders which can be used for temperatures higher than 80°C?
Cylinders with a fluoro elastomer seal can be used with temperatures of up to 120° C. These cylinders have the specification S6 in the type designation.
- Are there valves/cylinders specially designed for the automotive sector?
There are cylinders, valves and accessories specially designed for the automotive sector. These are listed in separate automotive catalogues.
